Pendant light heights over an island compared
As checked on 27 October 2026, Visual Comfort, a US lighting maker, recommends 30 to 36 inches (76–91 cm) above the worktop. Other guides give a slightly wider or narrower range. None of them sets one height for every kitchen.

Read the table from the top: the first row is Visual Comfort's range, and the rest set spacing and size. The island under the lights has its own sizes, set out in our guide to kitchen island size. Every other kitchen size is in our kitchen dimensions guides.
Island pendants hang 30 to 36 inches above the worktop, says Visual Comfort
Visual Comfort recommends hanging island pendants 30 to 36 inches (76–91 cm) above the worktop. It measures that gap from the bottom of the light to the top of the worktop. The ceiling is not the starting point: the island is.
Other guides give close figures:
- Joon Loloi: 24 to 36 inches (61–91 cm) above the island.
- Cyncly, a kitchen design software maker: 30 to 32 inches (76–81 cm) above the worktop.
- Tala, a UK lighting maker: 70 to 80 cm (28–32 in) above the worktop.
All of these ranges overlap at about 30 to 31 inches (76–80 cm). That is a safe height if you are unsure.
Visual Comfort says the light should be low enough to light the worktop well. The higher a pendant hangs, the more its light spreads and the dimmer the worktop looks. But it should not block your view across the island. The height of the people who use the island matters too, so taller households can hang the lights a little higher.
A taller ceiling moves the pendant up within the range, not above it
A taller ceiling moves the pendant higher within the 30 to 36 inch range, not above it, says Visual Comfort. It suggests close to 36 inches (91 cm) under a tall ceiling and about 30 inches (76 cm) under a low one. That keeps the ceiling, the cord, the light and the island in proportion.
Measured from the floor, the numbers look like this. A standard US worktop is 36 inches (91 cm) high, as our guide to standard countertop height explains. So a pendant 30 to 36 inches above it hangs with its bottom 66 to 72 inches (168–183 cm) above the floor.
With no worktop below, Tala says to hang a pendant 2.1 to 2.4 m (7–8 ft) above the floor, so heads clear it.
If the island sits at bar height, measure up from the higher top. Our guide to counter height and bar height gives both.
Two pendants suit a short island, and three suit most others
Two pendants suit a short island, and three suit most others. Cyncly, a kitchen design software maker, says two can be enough on an island of about 5 to 6 feet (1.5–1.8 m). For most islands, it says three give the best balance of light and symmetry.
Visual Comfort agrees that smaller islands do best with two and larger ones with three. Both leave room for taste:
- Two large pendants can cover a long island.
- Three small pendants can fit over a short one.
Whatever you choose, the lights should cover the whole worktop you work on. Use the kitchen island size calculator to find your island length first.
Space pendants evenly and centre them on the island
Pendants look best spaced evenly along the island and centred across its width. Visual Comfort gives a simple rule for two pendants: divide the island length by four. Each pendant hangs that far in from its end, on the island's centre line.
On an 8 foot (96 in, 244 cm) island, that puts each pendant 24 inches (61 cm) from its end. The two lights then hang 48 inches (122 cm) apart. With three pendants, the middle one hangs dead centre, says Visual Comfort.
Makers give these gaps between pendants:
- Joon Loloi: at least 24 inches (61 cm) apart, whatever their size.
- Cyncly: 30 to 32 inches (76–81 cm) apart for three pendants, and at least 6 inches (15 cm) in from the island edge.
- Tala: 60 to 75 cm (24–30 in) apart for medium pendants.
Bigger pendants need more space between them, and small ones can sit closer, says Tala.
Each pendant should be at least 12 inches narrower than the island
Each pendant should be at least 12 inches (30 cm) narrower than the island is wide. Cyncly gives that rule: measure the island from front to back, then take away 12 inches. The answer is the widest each pendant should be.
Cyncly's example is a 27 inch (69 cm) island, which takes pendants no wider than 15 inches (38 cm). Tala sorts pendants by width:
- Small: under 20 cm (8 in), and they can sit closer together.
- Medium: 20 to 40 cm (8–16 in).
- Large: over 40 cm (16 in), so use fewer and space them further apart.
An island with seats is deeper than one without, as our guide to the countertop overhang for seating explains. A deeper island can take a wider pendant.
How to hang pendant lights over an island in six steps
Start from the island top, not the ceiling.
- Measure the island length and its width from front to back.
- Choose two or three pendants, each at least 12 inches (30 cm) narrower than the island width.
- Mark the centre line of the island on the ceiling above it.
- Space the pendants evenly on that line: for two, a quarter of the island length in from each end.
- Set the height: 30 to 36 inches (76–91 cm) from the island top to the bottom of each light, or 70 to 80 cm in the UK.
- Check the view: sit and stand at the island, and make sure nobody's line of sight across it is blocked.
An electrician should fit the ceiling points and wiring.
Common problems with pendant light height, and how to fix them
Most pendant problems come from lights hung too high, too low or too close together.
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The worktop looks dim under the lights | The pendants hang well over 36 in (91 cm) above the worktop, so the light spreads out | Lower them to 30–36 in (76–91 cm) above the island |
| The lights block the view across the island | The pendants cross your eye line, often under about 30 in (76 cm) | Raise them within the range; taller households can go near 36 in |
| The pendants look crowded | They hang less than 24 in (61 cm) apart, or are too wide | Space them further apart, or use two smaller pendants |
| The lights look off centre | They were set by the ceiling, not the island | Mark the island centre line and space them evenly along it |
| The pendants overhang the edge | They are wider than the island width minus 12 in (30 cm) | Choose narrower pendants, at least 6 in (15 cm) in from the edge |

A hob on the island needs a hood, not a pendant, over it: see our guide to range hood height.
The island also needs free floor around it, as our guide to the space around a kitchen island shows.
Quick questions
- How high should pendant lights be above a kitchen island?
Not one fixed height, but Visual Comfort gives 30 to 36 inches (76–91 cm) from the bottom of the light to the worktop. Stay near 30 inches under a low ceiling and near 36 under a tall one. UK maker Tala gives 70 to 80 cm.
- How high should pendant lights be hung from the floor?
No. Over an island, measure from the worktop, not the floor. On a 36 inch (91 cm) worktop, 30 to 36 inches above it puts the bottom of the light 66 to 72 inches (168–183 cm) up. With no worktop below, Tala gives 2.1 to 2.4 m (7–8 ft).
- Should I do 2 or 3 pendant lights over an island?
Not one rule, but island length matters most. Cyncly says two can be enough on an island of about 5 to 6 feet (1.5–1.8 m), and three suit most islands. Visual Comfort adds that two large pendants can cover a long island.
- How many pendant lights over a 10 ft island?
Not a fixed number, but three is usual. Cyncly says three pendants suit most islands, and Visual Comfort says larger islands typically call for three. Two large pendants can also cover a long island, says Visual Comfort.
- What size pendants over an 8 ft island?
Not by the length. Cyncly sizes pendants by the island width: take away 12 inches (30 cm) to find the widest pendant. On an 8 foot island, Visual Comfort hangs two pendants 24 inches (61 cm) in from each end.
- Should pendant lights be centred over a kitchen island?
Yes. Visual Comfort hangs pendants on the centre line of the island and spaces them evenly along its length. With three, the middle one hangs dead centre. Cyncly keeps each light at least 6 inches (15 cm) in from the island edge.
How we check
We take every clearance from published planning guidelines and manufacturer guides, and record the page and the date we checked it. Our examples are drawn to scale from the dimensions they state. They are planning examples, not approvals for installation: services, fixings and local rules need your designer or installer. Our editorial policy.
