Backsplash heights compared
As checked on 26 October 2026, a standard backsplash is either about 4 inches (10 cm) high or full height. A full-height backsplash fills the 18 inches (46 cm) between the worktop and the wall cabinets. In the UK it is called a splashback, and a short one is an upstand.
| Backsplash | Height | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Short backsplash (US) | About 4 in (10 cm); 3⅞ in (9.8 cm) on one laminate countertop | VT Industries |
| Full height, up to the wall cabinets (US) | 18 in (46 cm) | KraftMaid |
| Full height, no wall cabinets | Up to the ceiling | Caesarstone |
| Laminate upstand (UK) | About 120 mm (4¾ in) | DIY Kitchens |
| Stone upstand (UK) | Up to 200 mm (7⅞ in) | DIY Kitchens |
| Full splashback, up to the wall units (UK) | About 490 mm (19¼ in); 500 mm (19¾ in) over a 30 mm worktop | DIY Kitchens |
| Behind the hob, up to the hood | 750 mm (29½ in) on one maker's splashback | Belling |

Read the table by the wall you have. With wall cabinets, a full backsplash stops at their underside, set out in our guide to upper cabinet height. Every other size is in our kitchen dimensions guides.
A short backsplash is about 4 inches high
A short backsplash is about 4 inches (10 cm) high. VT Industries, a US countertop maker, builds a backsplash 3⅞ inches (9.8 cm) high into its Classic laminate countertop.
A short backsplash covers the joint where the worktop meets the wall. That is where water and crumbs collect. It is often made from the same material as the worktop, so it matches.
Above it, the wall is open. You can paint it, tile it or leave it plain. The worktop under it is 36 inches (91 cm) high in the US, as our guide to standard kitchen countertop height explains. So a 4-inch backsplash stops about 40 inches (102 cm) from the floor.
No height is fixed by a rule. NKBA, the US National Kitchen & Bath Association, sets no backsplash height in its kitchen planning guidelines.
A full-height backsplash fills the 18 inches up to the wall cabinets
A full-height backsplash fills the 18 inches (46 cm) between the worktop and the wall cabinets. KraftMaid, a large US cabinet maker, says wall cabinets are typically fitted 54 inches (137 cm) above the floor, or 18 inches above the worktop.
Caesarstone, a quartz worktop maker, says a full-height backsplash runs from the worktop to the ceiling. With wall cabinets, it stops at their base. So the height depends on the wall:
- Under wall cabinets: stop at the underside of the cabinet box, about 18 inches up.
- Open wall or shelves: run it to the ceiling, or to a line you choose, such as the top of a window.
- Behind the hob: run it up to the hood, as the next section shows.
A full backsplash covers more wall, so splashes and steam do not reach paint. It also needs more material, so measure it separately from the worktop.
UK upstands are about 120 mm, and splashbacks fill about 490 mm
In the UK, a laminate upstand is about 120 mm (4¾ in) high, says DIY Kitchens, a UK kitchen maker. Its granite, quartz and Dekton upstands can be as high as 200 mm (7⅞ in).
A full splashback fills the gap up to the wall units. DIY Kitchens gives that gap as about 490 mm (19¼ in) over a 40 mm worktop, and 500 mm (19¾ in) over a 30 mm one. Measure to the bottom of the wall unit, not to the light pelmet, the trim under it.
DIY Kitchens notes that its splashbacks are about 20 mm thick. They sit on the worktop, so you lose about 20 mm of worktop depth along that wall.
The wall units above follow their own sizes, set out in our guide to standard kitchen cabinet sizes.
Behind the hob, the backsplash should reach the hood
Behind the hob, the backsplash should run up to the hood, because that wall gets the most heat and grease. Belling, a UK cooker maker, makes its hob splashbacks with a visible height of 750 mm (29½ in). It calls that the ideal height between the hob and the cooker hood.
The material matters more here than anywhere else in the kitchen:
- Laminate upstands: DIY Kitchens does not recommend them around the hob, because gas flames can reach the wood-based board.
- Acrylic panels: Wilsonart, a US surface maker, says its acrylic backsplash must not go behind a gas cooktop. Behind electric or induction, leave at least 2 inches (50 mm) from the back of the hob.
- Quartz: Caesarstone warns that a full-height quartz backsplash can develop burn marks near the fire.
The hood height sets the top of this panel. Our guide to range hood height gives the gap for each cooktop. Then check the hob manual for any gap it asks for at the wall.
How to choose your backsplash height in five steps
Start from what is on the wall, then pick the height.
- Look at the wall: wall cabinets, open wall, a window or a hood.
- Choose the type: a short backsplash of about 4 inches (10 cm), or full height.
- For full height, measure from the worktop to the bottom of the cabinet box, about 18 inches (46 cm), or 490 mm in the UK.
- Behind the hob, measure up to the hood and choose a material the hob manual allows.
- Check each piece: its width and height, and the cut-outs for sockets and windows.
A stone backsplash is priced by area, like the worktop. Follow our guide to measuring kitchen countertops, and measure each upright piece on its own.

Open the countertop area calculator →Common problems with backsplash height, and how to fix them
Most backsplash problems come from the wrong height, a gap left behind the hob or the wrong material.
| What you see | Why it happens | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A strip of bare wall shows under the wall cabinets | The backsplash was cut short of the 18 in (46 cm) gap | Measure to the bottom of the cabinet box, not the trim |
| Grease stains the wall above the hob | A short backsplash stops well below the hood | Run a splashback up to the hood: Belling's shows 750 mm (29½ in) |
| A laminate upstand behind a gas hob is scorched | Gas flames reach the wood-based board | Use stone, or a splashback made to go behind a hob |
| An acrylic panel near the cooktop is marked | It sits too close to the heat | Leave at least 2 in (50 mm) behind electric or induction; never use it behind gas |
| The worktop feels shallower than planned | A 20 mm splashback sits on the worktop | Allow about 20 mm of depth for it when you plan |

Quick questions
- What is the standard backsplash height?
Not one fixed height. Most backsplashes are either about 4 inches (10 cm) high or full height. A full one fills the 18 inches (46 cm) between the worktop and the wall cabinets, the gap KraftMaid gives as typical.
- How high is a full height backsplash?
Only as high as the wall it covers. Under standard US wall cabinets that is about 18 inches (46 cm), and about 490 mm (19¼ in) in a UK kitchen. With no wall cabinets, Caesarstone describes it running up to the ceiling.
- Is a 4 inch backsplash outdated?
No. A 4-inch backsplash is a style choice, not a rule, and NKBA's planning guidelines set no backsplash height. It covers the joint where the worktop meets the wall, and you can paint or tile the wall above it.
- What is the standard height of a splashback in the UK?
Not one size. DIY Kitchens makes laminate upstands about 120 mm (4¾ in) high and stone ones up to 200 mm (7⅞ in). A full splashback fills the gap to the wall units, about 490 mm (19¼ in) over a 40 mm worktop.
- What is the standard splashback size over a hob?
Only as high as the hood above it. Belling makes its hob splashbacks with a visible height of 750 mm (29½ in), which it calls the ideal height between the hob and the cooker hood. Follow your hob and hood manuals for any gaps.
- Is a 2 inch backsplash enough?
Only if you just want to cover the joint. It is lower than the usual sizes: VT Industries builds its backsplash 3⅞ inches (9.8 cm) high, and DIY Kitchens makes laminate upstands about 120 mm (4¾ in). NKBA sets no minimum height.
How we check
We take every clearance from published planning guidelines and manufacturer guides, and record the page and the date we checked it. Our examples are drawn to scale from the dimensions they state. They are planning examples, not approvals for installation: services, fixings and local rules need your designer or installer. Our editorial policy.
